How to Stop Your Gym Towel Sliding Off the Bench
Share
You lay your towel on the bench, sit down, lean back. It's already moved. On an incline or a machine seat it creeps a bit further every set, and by the end of the session it's on the floor.
I know this one well. My towel slipped and slid off the bench every single set, which is more or less how VIVID started.
It's a small thing, but it keeps interrupting your training. And the part of the bench you meant to cover usually isn't covered. Below is why it happens, what you can do with the towel you already own, and what actually fixes it.
Why gym towels slide off benches
Most benches are covered in smooth vinyl. Easy to wipe, hard-wearing, and almost nothing for a towel to grip.
Then you move. Sit down, lie back, press, get up between sets, and each time the towel shifts a little. On a flat bench that adds up slowly. On an incline bench or a machine seat, gravity helps it along towards the low end.
But the main cause is simpler. A flat towel has nothing holding it in place, so it just rests on top, and every time you shift your weight the towel shifts with you.
Quick fixes you can try today
None of these cost anything, and they do help. Use them together.
Fold it to fit the bench. Fold the towel in half lengthways so it's roughly as wide as the pad. Doubled up, it carries more weight in the middle and has fewer loose edges hanging off the sides, so it moves less when you shift.
Tuck the top over the end of the bench. Drape it over the end or the headrest and tuck it under slightly. On an incline, tuck the high end. That bit of overhang gives the towel something to catch on and slows the slide.
Use a longer towel. A short hand towel covers less and has less fabric holding it down, so it shifts easily. A longer one covers more of the pad and leaves enough to tuck at the top.
They help, but they don't fully solve it. A tucked towel still loosens as you move, and you'll probably still be straightening it between sets. To stop the slide, the towel has to be anchored to the bench.
The fix that lasts: a hooded gym towel
A hooded gym towel has a hood at one end. The hood hooks over the bench top or headrest, so the bench holds the towel instead of the towel just sitting there. When you move, the towel stays where it is.
Getting that right took me at least five prototypes, starting in my garage in 2024.
The VIVID hooded gym towel is 140 x 55cm, long enough to cover the length of a bench. That makes it a barrier between you and shared equipment. You're not lying on other people's sweat, and they're not lying on yours.
It's made from 300gsm microfibre terry: a thick fabric of raised towelling loops. It's a proper towel, not a thin, flat cloth with nothing to hold it to the bench.
Keeping it off the floor between sets: the magnet upgrade
A towel that stays on the bench still has to go somewhere when you get up. The magnet upgrade adds a built-in magnet strap for $10 per towel, so you can hang it on the rack or machine frame instead of dropping it on the floor.
It grips magnetic steel, which covers most racks, frames and cable stacks. It won't hold on aluminium, plastic or some stainless steel. No steel within reach? Loop the strap over a rail.

A safe spot for your phone and keys
Phones and keys tend to end up on the floor next to the bench, or balanced on a machine. The towel has a zip pocket, so they stay with you and go wherever the towel goes.
Which colour suits you?

FAQ
Will the hooded towel fit any gym bench?
The hood is designed to slip over the end of a standard flat or incline bench, or over the headrest. At 140 x 55cm, it covers the length of a typical bench. If it doesn't suit your equipment, you're covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee.
What does the magnet stick to?
Magnetic steel, like most racks and frames. The magnet upgrade section above explains what it will and won't hold on. The magnet strap is built in and costs $10 extra per towel.
Can I wash it normally?
Machine wash it like a normal towel. If it has the magnet strap, put it in a wash bag first. It air-dries in about 2 to 3 hours.
What if it doesn't suit me?
You're covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee, even if you've used the towel. Your refund is paid once the towel is returned to us.
Train without the slide
A towel that stays on the bench means you stop fixing it between sets. It also keeps a full-length barrier between you and the equipment.
